Confused about Burst Mode? Here's how to do it!

The burst mode (also known as continuous mode) allows you to take a number of pictures quickly without having to stop. You can capture up to 60 images per second depending on the capabilities of your camera.

What does Burst Mode mean?

The burst mode allows you to quickly take multiple photos. When the burst mode is enabled, you hold down the shutter and your camera will take a series photos.

When should you use the Burst Mode?

Technically, burst mode is available at any time. If you don't press the shutter button for too long, you can take pictures in succession every time you see a new object. Cameras vary in their burst modes. Older and lower-end cameras have a mode that takes 3 photos every second. The top sports camera of its class can shoot at 20, 30, or 60 frames per seconds. The average camera can shoot 6-12 frames per seconds.

Most camera burst mode are not limited. Your camera's buffer, where photos are stored before being added to the memory card, fills up when you take a picture. When the buffer fills up, the burst mode stops working. (At least until it clears the space in the buffer, when you can resume shooting bursts.) The exception is when you are using a high-end camera or a low-quality image. In general, however, the burst mode will eventually freeze if it's held down.

How to use Burst Mode (step by step)

Now that you understand the definition and importance of burst mode, let's look at how to use it for best results:

Step 1: Enable Burst Mode on your camera

Enabling burst mode depends on your camera (and can vary from model to model, so don't assume that all cameras from the same make or even from the same series are the same). In general, you want to look for the Drive menu or the Shooting mode menu. Once you find the Shooting mode menu, you will want to select the option Continuous or High Continuous, sometimes denoted as multiple stacked frames.

Step 2: Select the relevant Focus Mode

By activating the burst mode, you also have to set the proper focus mode. Continuous focus will continue to track moving objects even while you hold down the shutter button, helping to maintain sharp focus as your subject moves across the scene and you capture bursts of images.

Alternatively, if you have a shot composed but want to guarantee a good pose, beautiful moment, etc., I recommend using your camera's single-shot autofocus mode. Simply half-press the shutter button to lock focus, then as your subject moves into the frame press the shutter button fully down to fire a burst.

Step 3: Choose your settings carefully

Finally, you should set the right camera settings for your shooting situation. While this will vary from scene to scene, make sure your shutter speed is relatively fast; otherwise you'll get blurry shots (or, if your shutter speed is very slow, your camera's burst mode won't work very well). 1/250 second and up for the slower moving objects and 1/1000 second and up for faster moving objects.

Step 4: Capture a Burst of images

Now the fun begins! As soon as you find a decent subject to shoot, hold down the shutter button, and your camera will shoot a burst of photos.

It's important to exercise restraint when using burst mode; otherwise, your camera buffer will fill up, and you will miss critical moments. So wait for the good shots to take shape – if you're using single-shot autofocus, you usually have to lock focus first – then press the shutter button all the way down to take the perfect photo.
