Nikon ZR Overview
Nikon + RED Color Science
The fusion of Nikon’s imaging expertise and RED’s cinema legacy brings unparalleled flexibility to professional workflows. The Nikon ZR supports the REDCODE RAW (R3D NE) recording format, offering the REDWideGamutRGB color space and Log3G10 curve, alongside Nikon’s proprietary N-RAW, ProRes RAW HQ/422 HQ, and high-quality H.264/H.265 compression codecs. The camera can capture up to 6K at 60 fps, 4K at 120 fps, and 1080p at 240 fps, giving filmmakers expansive options for high-resolution and slow-motion cinematography.
Audio Capture
Engineered for cinematic audio precision, the ZR features 32-bit float and 24-bit audio recording, ensuring ultra-high dynamic range and pristine clarity. It supports standard 48 kHz linear PCM for seamless post-production compatibility. Built-in configurable microphones provide five selectable pickup patterns, including front/narrow, front, rear, omnidirectional, and binaural. With a line input and digital accessory shoe for external mics—such as the ME-D10 shotgun microphone—and a headphone jack for live monitoring, the ZR is prepared for professional-grade audio production in any scenario.
Recording and Output
Designed for mobile filmmaking and efficiency, the camera records directly to a CFexpress Type B card located conveniently within the battery compartment for optimized portability. An additional microSD slot offers proxy recording capabilities. A micro-HDMI output enables external monitoring or recording on industry-standard devices, supporting a fully integrated on-set workflow.
Advanced Autofocus
Powered by deep learning, Nikon’s next-generation autofocus system features up to nine subject-detection modes, intelligently tracking people, animals, and vehicles. With precise and continuous focus performance, filmmakers can rely on the ZR to maintain critical sharpness in dynamic shooting conditions.
Nikon Z Mount and Ecosystem
Featuring the wide, shallow Nikon Z mount, the ZR is compatible with the complete lineup of NIKKOR Z lenses as well as third-party lenses and adapters. This design provides maximum optical flexibility, making it suitable for everything from narrative filmmaking to commercial production. The camera is further supported by an expanded ecosystem of accessories—such as cages, rigs, microphones, and handheld systems—from Nikon and leading third-party manufacturers including SmallRig.
Large, Bright Display
The ZR incorporates a 4" variable-angle touchscreen display with DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, 1000 cd/m² brightness, and 3.07 million-dot resolution, ensuring clear, accurate monitoring of footage and settings. The intuitive screen automatically adjusts orientation when switching between horizontal and vertical shooting modes.
Custom LUTs
Filmmakers can load up to 10 custom LUTs directly into the camera, enabling real-time color preview during recording and ensuring a consistent visual workflow from capture to post-production.
Lenses and Image Stabilization
With its standard Z mount, the camera supports the full range of NIKKOR Z lenses and numerous third-party optics. Integrated 5-axis in-body image stabilization delivers up to 7.5 stops of compensation, ensuring exceptionally stable footage when using any prime or zoom lens, even in handheld or moving-shot scenarios.
Dual-Base ISO and Shutter Angle
To maximize dynamic range and low-light performance, the ZR features dual-base ISO settings of 800 and 6400 for both Log3G10 and N-Log profiles. The camera also offers a full cinema-style shutter angle system, with 15 selectable steps ranging from 5.6° to 360°, providing precise control over exposure and motion blur.
Frame.io Integration
With seamless Frame.io connectivity via the companion app, the ZR enables cloud-based workflows for effortless asset management, live streaming, and immediate collaboration with post-production teams.
Filmmaker-Oriented User Interface
Designed with professional filmmakers in mind, the interface offers a dedicated stills/video switch and multiple customizable function buttons. An intuitive shortcut menu provides quick access to essential tools such as grids, zebra, waveform, focus peaking, and touch-responsive autofocus controls, ensuring maximum efficiency on set.
Power Options
The camera can be powered by an EN-EL15c rechargeable battery or externally via USB-C using optional power supplies or power banks, making it adaptable to both mobile and studio environments.
Ultracompact Design
Engineered for versatility, the ZR delivers full cinema camera performance in a body the size of a compact mirrorless camera. Its lightweight construction makes it ideal for field shooting, vehicle mounting, gimbals, drones, steadycam operations, and POV shots—empowering filmmakers to capture cinematic footage from virtually any perspective.
